N.I. Water

27th Feb 2023

Anna from N.I. Water visited the school today and presented an Assembly to the Yr. 3 - 7 children on saving Water and the importance of refill.
70% of the Earth is covered in water. It is very important that we understand the roles that water plays on our food chain and why it is our responsibility to protect it from pollution and prevent wasting it.

All the children were provided with a free reusable water bottle and the children are encouraged to 'Take the Pledge' to say no to single use plastic water bottles. This is keeping with our 'Plastic Promise' we made earlier this year with ‘Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’. We need parental support to make this possible. This is an area that the children in the Eco - council need support with in order for the school to hopefully be awarded the Green Flag.
N.I. Water have also given the children a small sand timer to attach to your shower at home. It is recommended that we shower for 4 mins to try and preserve water. On average to fill a bath it takes 80 Litres, to use a washing machine it takes 60 Litres and to wash a car it takes 15 Litres. We can try to use water better for a 5-minute power shower we use 90 litres of water compared to a 5-minute shower uses 35 Litres. Similarly, if we leave the tap on when we brush our teeth, we will use 6 litres of water compared to 1 litre if we turn it on and off.
We also have to be mindful of what it says in the advertisement from N.I. Water "Bag it and bin it. Don't flush it!" Things like wipes and cotton buds must go in the bin and not in the toilet.
The children had lots of fun learning about how to manage water usage and are excited to begin using their reusable bottles and shower timers.
